What is the Most Widely Used Assessment Tool for Addiction?

The SASSI-3 (Subtle Substance Detection Inventory, Third Edition) is one of the most widely used patented detection tools in the United States. The CAGE is a commonly used 5-question tool used to detect drug and alcohol use. This evaluation is a quick questionnaire that helps determine if an alcohol level assessment is needed. If a person answers yes to two or more questions, a full evaluation is recommended.

In order to ensure an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan, it is essential to continuously reevaluate symptoms of mental illness. Qualified and trained physicians can provide a comprehensive evaluation that allows the treatment provider to determine with the client the most appropriate treatment location and treatment plan (CSAT 2000c). For those who have already developed or are starting the path to addiction, these evaluations are the important first steps toward addiction treatment and recovery. These tools allow addiction professionals to initiate, at a minimum, an ongoing process of patient education and, at best, full treatment and recovery. The evaluation examines the client's life in much more detail in order to make an accurate diagnosis, the appropriate location of the treatment, the lists of problems and the goals of the treatment.

In addition, reevaluation is an opportunity to seek the client's opinion on what works and what doesn't work for them during treatment and modify treatment accordingly. The SASSI-3 and CAGE assessments are two of the most widely used tools for detecting addiction. These assessments provide valuable information that can help addiction professionals initiate patient education and full treatment and recovery. Comprehensive evaluations conducted by qualified and trained physicians are also essential for ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
